Java Kai

Java Kai is where Kapaʻa actually starts its day. It’s a small, unfussy café right on the main strip through town — house-roasted coffee, fresh-baked pastries, and a breakfast menu that covers everyone from the person who wants a mac nut latte and a scone to the person who needs a full breakfast burrito before a hike. Gluten-free options are handled well, which isn’t always a given on the island. We point almost every guest here in their first 24 hours, mostly because it’s an easy walk from the condos and it sets the tone for the trip — no rush, good coffee, everyone in slippers. Mornings get busy between 7 and 9am, especially on weekends, so if you want a table rather than a to-go cup, aim earlier or come back after 10. It closes at 5pm, so this is strictly a daytime stop — grab something before a beach day or a Wailua River outing, not on the way back from dinner. Order at the counter, find a seat outside if you can, and let the day start slow. That’s the whole point of being here.
